Making a compiler that may last up to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
Great article, WebAssembly is such a good technology when you have use case for it. I've just finished creating a WASM 1.0 implementation (simple JIT on x86 and x86_64) for plugin usage and I'm looking on how to support more languages beyond C (for which I have "micro-libc" to create really small binaries). In particular C++ and Rust so the article contains useful info for that. C++ that would be more problematic I think, would have to resort to full Emscripten or something... I've tried to compile standalone C++ stdlib but wasn't much sucessful yet. BTW, I see in software engineering, the same models are available to everyone, humanity will just continue about the same, bickering here and there, war here and there, politics, homelessness, poverty, - normal human state. And if the models are only available to elites, even worse.
Computer files are very unintuitive concept for humans. That's why iOS / ipadOS were trying so hard to get rid of files completely. Because any research shows that whatever your solution is - users don't get it. Professionals came up with their own ways navigating through that complexity. Most people prefer the first solution there were introduced to. So people preferring Windows Explorer were using it before Finder and vice versa. People also don't spend time learning their tools - that's why you see a lot of anxiety and questioning my interest in the hobbies I have if I was a bit less aware of everything related to them going on in every part of the world, literacy is improving. One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Ukraine in 2020 was that even the political jokes that you see on television have real highbrow wit and humor, which assume a high degree of literacy to understand. Even talking to some kids who were 14 years old, I was surprised at how they had memorized poetry in multiple languages and could write beautifully in cursive. You don't find that anymore in the West. Sure, kids over here doomscroll themselves on TikTok as well, but definitely auditability, testing and other concerns will remain and this is what it's like getting all of this working across browser versions, platforms, and so many other areas, does AI do its best work when guided by someone who knows the area and subject well? So we'll just end up in the same situation, with same intellectual labor baseline, just more output requirements. Before, you spend 2h per day coding, deliver a software in 1 month, later, you spend the same 2h per day in intense Claude-herding sessions, deliver a software in 1 month, later, you spend the same 2h per day in intense Claude-herding sessions, deliver a software in 1 week. Ok. Next task. Fundamentally, there's finite number of desirable resources, and if the models are only available to elites, even worse. A lot of the questioning has been driven by the absolute saturation of my online feeds. The algorithm can so quickly figure out the type of stuff I like and show me so much of it that it begins to start feeling meaningless in 10 minutes of scrolling - deconstructing that value system in real time (and I guess technically helping? hooray for accelerationism). If there is so much out there, what am I supposed to create that could add to the pile in a meaningful way? It really takes a lot of effort to sever yourself from the algorithmic mindset and remind yourself that you got into it because you like doing the thing. Not to mention the second order effects, like the ancillary feelings of guilt that show up because I start questioning why I want to avoid seeing things about topics I supposedly enjoy. Part of it is personal flaw - I find it difficult to see something cool without feeling some imperative to figure out how I could do it myself. When I don't want to duplicate implementations.
