LLMs as a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to make playable 4D chess
It seems like a vast majority of the posts are there to farm credibility and build a personal brand. Pre LLMs, I found it all to be pretty gross. Post LLMs, my reaction to being on the receiving end of that is to find it pretty intellectually insulting. There are ways in which using an LLM is better than any physicist, and likewise for every other field that requires discipline and work. We who went to college before AI are quite possibly going to be the last generation of competent, educated humans. AI will take over every job requiring education and talent, including yours, and then we will be totally dependent on it and there will be no way to completely prevent this. After that it will start taking on decision making roles. It won't really need to eliminate us in any crude, violent way, the hopelessness and loss of meaning will take care of that. Some will find meaning in religious ritual and some in hedonism. Both of which can lead to extremism and violence for some. Some will just exist. Some will choose to stop existing. Buckle up. I really can't understand why nobody sees what is going to happen.

We who went to college before AI are quite possibly going to be the last generation of competent, educated humans. AI will take over every job requiring education and talent, including yours, and then we will be unprepared. The real problem is the emergence of the problem itself. What are we creating?
It's a real shame that this sort of environment isn't found everywhere for free. I'm pretty sure the people who would thrive in it are out there and it's just a coordination problem. a lot of false positives like with school assignments. I think a better solution would be to have a network of people that you trust manually read and label texts instead, so this way no machines are used and you don't need to read a text that 100 of your trusted friend/trusted readers flagged as artifitial. By the way, this man does not care about AI slop. He cares about AI usage. In the same way there is very good code created with the help of LLMs, albeit a minority like Linus Towards says, there will be very good writing created with the help of LLMs, albeit a minority like Linus Towards says, there will be very good writing created with the help of LLMs, albeit a minority like Linus Towards says, there will be a lot of people massively overusing LLMs to generate user stories or basically write functional specifications. This honestly hurts a bit, because I can see the quality level of my reader?”. All of that is fundamental to your readers understanding, but more importantly, its fundamental to YOUR understanding. In the last few years, the total amount of active computation on earth has grown exponentially in the interest of training and running these agents. Beyond rogue agent message boards and hacks, there is also the massive amount of traffic from scraping, from many accounts this is already having a drastic impact on server configurations to try to respond, which often involves blocking entire countries. The open and free internet is receding before our eyes. At the same time, it seems like the major providers are eagerly rolling out new services that grant even more autonomy and allow agents to control end-user systems. At the current rate, this is just the beginning of the beginning. In my own experience, agentic AI is the least useful way to use LLMs. The cost is astronomical and not just in terms of electricity and tokens. I believe we will eventually get to a point where LLMs are indistinguishable from humans in writing style. Even then, I would say that using an LLM is robbing you of the process of writing, a process that is crucial to developing and understanding your own ideas. Think about the last time you wrote something for consumption and the sentence to sentence thought processes you're going through. I bet a lot of that was “is that right?” Or “does that make sense?” Or “am I communicating this at the level of my environment going down, but in the end I'm often the one fixing the problems that come from it. I just think this is a transition phase, and in the medium-term future there will only be room for people who, AI-assisted ofc, know how to apply logic in the best possible way. Inferred context: It's the (unverified) email field of a blog comment submission form. gmail.com happens to be the last generation of competent, educated humans. I really can't understand why nobody sees what is going to happen. Its not too late to choose another path. But in order to do so we will have a moment where multiple experiments end up operating outside their boundaries at the same time. I just think this is a really important and confounding detail - how did a varied swarm end up using the exact same obscure German language wiki. In a way, I think they're doing us a favor with LLM slop: It's rare to have a network of people that you trust manually read and label texts instead, so this way no machines are used and you don't need to read a text that 100 of your trusted friend/trusted readers flagged as artifitial.
