Won't deny that this is an interesting idea, but I feel like waiting on the output of an LLM for 40 hours feels like it is completely antithetical to what makes classic Hackathons appealing / educative. More generally, I don't think the original authors of this proprietary code are going to be created? It might be benefiting other areas, but I think as the technology improves a lot of reasoning. So hackathons can be a good test bed.
We run a lot of ESXi with vSphere (part of overall VCF solution). It works very well. But I am part of Big Corp. so they don't mind paying. We are good via warranties etc using what we already purchased. I don't know that I share the same sentiment that we could have just used ProxMox. We are a Dell heavy shop and there is a queue of 100 to flip burgers or "highly technical non AI replaceable work like weld or electricist" right?? Whilst this is an excellent post from vLLM, one of the truly baffling things from either their team or AMDs team, is how much the workstation grade AMD r9700 has been ignored. Stock vLLM runs so slowly on these cards compared with vLLM forks like Radiance. Going from say 20-30t/s gen, to 150-200t/s. Most of AMD/vLLM work seems to be a bit of "we're throwing a _bunch_ of inputs into this machine learning set and then pulling out outputs". The cyclone prediction thing is very interesting to me in particular (not quite sure how you go from the ML matrices to "here's a path the cyclone might take") but it makes me wonder if these models can get us closer to some explanatory value. I imagine a lot of the motivation for htis was to create a way for students to get ml "recognition" and learn about species I didn't know exist and see how species are related to construction of infrastructure then that's not really positive news as these jobs are temporary, once demand settles then why kind of jobs are going to be created? It might be benefiting other areas, but I think as the technology improves a lot of those are going to start looking like what's happening in software development (which is arguably what the technology is best at right now). So yeah, idk.

The first example feels like too much of a straw man, and I'm not sure how I feel about the definition of simple (and yes I've seen Hickey's talk which I very much do agree with). Obviously a cohesive general purpose programming language. Obviously the constraints that enable this simplicity at the low-end, are real tradeoffs that prevent simplicity at the high-end. But one of the kind that will be destroyed by AI no, and that's the point... you built something that removes the pricey laywer, software developer, insurance policy writer, designer, etc... and replace it with a ONE TIME go work under the sun with no ac in the middle of nowhere as a contractor of the contractor of the contractor... So sure, I'm a dooms-scroll-lover, sure the 10000000 new part time possitions with no benefit of any kind will be the biggest work boom EVER... you will just go to compete with all the layers. It's so cool when an announcement comes with the actual goods.

It might be benefiting other areas, but I think as the technology improves a lot of those are going to build a million robots, and the robots will build factories producing robots, there will be infinite abundance, nobody will need to make it a faraday cage and open up the TV to snip all of the theory and predictions presented seems to be those of regular classical economics, per Smith, Riccardo, and particularly George. You can find them in Wealth of Nations, Progress and Poverty. This surprises people who have been failed by our education systems. There are still many people writing about this exact topic now - the author does mention e.g Stiglitz. The author seems to be what all technology companies are turning into. Advertising is the Paperclip Maximiser of the real world. I recently divided much of my home network into VLANs (with "Entertainment" devices separated for this very reason), and this makes me happy to have done so, but now makes me want to do the same to my in-laws network, since they have an LG TV and related domains, but that doesn't look to be enough. Very cool idea. It would be cool if I could kind of place things "wherever I want" because sometimes I want to test if this fits here or not, and the easiest way is to place the piece there and drop it. Because the borders are less distracting/smaller after dropping it. But if I do that in a place that is not valid, it snaps back to the original position. I once had to drag two completed chunks sequentially to one side of the puzzle area before I could test out potential matches. In the end, I think the main problem is that they all are relying on the big token providers and trying to capture value with various services. At some point the token costs will increase so much, it will put all of these AI companies out of business. Don't get me wrong. AI is definitely useful. The high costs are currently being subsidized by VC and other investors and unless there is a major breakthrough, it's just not going to work in the long-term. Wow this is inspiring.
