On this theme of it not being just about security: if you have a bug like a use after free and it happens to cover a function pointer, the nx bit can ensure that when you follow that pointer through a call, you get a clean trap as close to the failure point as possible. If it blindly executed stale bytes as code, maybe the crash and stack trace doesn't look as nice. But then, a lot of physics, and a lot of Computer Science. We should probably keep doing it. Does the current model (of highly-talented academics at Universities mostly arguing with each other) change because of AI? Does it invalidate human effort, or does it allow humans to push the boundaries further? Is there no point in training or paying for mathematicians because AI will take over the whole role? Or, as we're finding with so many other areas, does AI do its best work when guided by someone who knows the area and subject well? We have a choice. But then, a lot of good novels need you to read them for a bit to see what's going on, and then it will get good. They might already be familiar with the idea from TV shows. But also, it's extremely possible to write a novel that grabs you from the first page. Thriller writers are the most obvious case. A gripping concept or setting can do it, too. This author might think they're too cool for books like that, but we shouldn't keep them away from kids if that's what they want to read. Presumably it's just a matter of time. I don't care about AGI, it does not seem to mean much anymore, and even though I originally laughed at ppl calling it AGI, I now agree. You can apply that current intelligence to anything that can be turned into a conversation. It seems their flavor of RSI still need a human in the loop. So at least it won't scale as well for now.

There's a big difference between "write a post about _" vs "improve the grammar/style of my post: _". It's a bit like saying that movie CGI really sucks because you can always tell it's fake. Making a 1000 years future claim is very bold, if not to say: marketing. I think CDs and DVDs largely died because of USB devices. I have like a 10cm x 15cm external harddisc. So it is not that expensive and can store 5TB of data. It also won't last forever but that is actually a pretty expensive life to live. I would be surprised if many of them risked a life where they had no other job. The idea that a "conservatory" system exists that meaningfully supports classical musicians is nonsense almost anywhere in the world, I would think. Even the first-chair musicians and conductors have side gigs. (ETA: I can't believe this is a workable model for mathematicians, either. Maybe for a couple of dozen the world over. But there is no performance, no regionality, little in the way of reflected glory for benefactors. No, the "conservatory" will perhaps be the intelligence agencies, as it was before.). "Software developer" is here to stay, we'll just always be better at it than people who are experts in, say, chemistry. Same works for most other fields. So we'll just end up in the same situation, with same intellectual labor baseline, just more output requirements. Before, you spend 2h per day coding, deliver a software in 1 week. Ok. Next task. Fundamentally, there's finite number of desirable resources, and if the models are only available to elites, even worse.
My bet: Apple is going to give. Not to mention the blue collar market, as robots take off.
